Speicherriegel, Dual Channel

Beitragvon osabit » 08.04.2005 13:48

Hallo Leute,

brauchst du ein Dual Channel fähiges Mainboard;

Even if your motherboard supports Dual Channel, you don't need it! Dual channel means that if you have 2 modules of 512MB/533MHz, they could work as 1066MHz in Dual channel... Unfortunately your CPU would max. support 533MHz FSB... which means that Dual channel will not be activated or could not be used as far as your RAM is at 533MHz az well.

:!: The only thing you should look at when buying RAM is to buy at least with the same frequency as your CPU FSB is... If your CPU is with 400MHz FSB, and you buy RAM on 533MHz, it will just work on 400... the opposite is bad...

@cojak

@Shiny
Dualchannel speeds up your ram transfer rates even if your CPU has a lower FSB, e.g.: Sonoma notebooks (FSB 533) with DDR2-533 have significantly lower transfer rates than sonoma notebooks with dual DDR2-533.

Any reasonable explanation for that? :?:

No, but benchmarks show higher transfer rates - of course far from double, but recognizable higher.
One explanation (after using Google ;-)): Devices (such as integrated graphics) can access RAM without limiting the bandwidth available for the processor.

rough explanation why dual channel is faster

Beitragvon andal1208 » 01.03.2006 18:44

Hello,
as you seem to bother about the dual channel being faster problem - here is the solution:
If you access the RAM the speedup is mostly done by doubling the channel width. So if you have one module or two different modules installed the access is 64 Bit wide. If you have dual channel access it is 128 Bit wide. Thus you double your memory bandwidth (without doubling the frequency, but with doubling the bus width). Of course this only helps boosting the performance, if you need the memory bandwidth. Otherwise - like always - the two memory modules only wait longer for your keyboard input. :P

Hope this helps,

Andal

Aaron:

I have an Amilo M 6453 with a dual channel conroller (400MHz FSB). Here are the results from the memory test from PCMark 05. Each test has been run twice:

2x256MB: 2178/2249
1x512MB: 2209/2212
2x512MB: 2200/2214
