Frage Netzwerk

Beitragvon Complete » 29.10.2007 05:31

I have a simple network question. I have a Linux Distribution on a laptop and I have the network hardware ready so so that I can connect to the internet. I already have a computer connected to the internet. So I suppose in order to have two computers I need some sort of hub device. Can anyone offer a suggestion about this?

Basically I do not know the first thing to do. Should I inform my internet service provider or is having multiple computers connected to one internet hub is something they would not be concerned with. Also, what sort of hub should I get?

First of all, it would be necessary to know, how you are connected to the internet. If you have a DSL-connection it should be very simple:

Modern DSL-routers normally have multiple ethernet-ports. That means a hub is included.
Just have a look at the rear side of your router. Probably you can plug in your laptop there.
If you do nat have a second port, a simple ethernet-hub is sufficient to connect your laptop. Maybe you can lend one from somebody to test it?
I only know the german market, here a device that fullfills your needs, costs between 10 and 20 Euro.

For ISDN the same strategy should work. If you use something like a 56k-Modem or a connection via your TV-cable, it may become a little more complicated. Please let us know!

btw: Using translation software is a nice gimmick, but mostly the meaning of the content gets lost. ;-)

In case your DSL moden does not already have a built-in hub, you might want to consider to buy a hub that also contains a WLAN access point so that you can also connect by wireless LAN.

If both of your two computers belong to you, there's usually no need to inform your service provider, but if you want to share the connection with someone else you better double-check the T&C of your subscription, some providers don't allow to share the connection.

It is not a DSL connection. There is a box that has come from the Internet Service Provider which is a cable company. The cable comes out of the wall and goes to a box and the network cable goes from that to the computer.

Ok, doesn't make a big difference on this level. What hikaru and I have written does also apply to cable connections.

Modern routers support both DSL and cable modems (if there is a difference at all in their network protocol).

Can you see if the box your provider sent to you already contains a hub? What's the product name of the box?
