Amilo M 1420, cooler too noisy!!!

Beitragvon viveknigam » 06.06.2005 08:23

Hello,

I also have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M 1420, however I am having several problems:

- First, I think the cooler is too noisy, and it works almost all the time...
- I have installed the KNOPPIX Linux together with the original WinXP Home, and when I am in Linux the cooler doesn't stop for a second... it is driving me crazy!!!

I wanted to know if this only with my computer, or it happens with all of the Amilo 1420...

Thanks,

Vivek

Hello Vivek

I don't have these problems and I've got a M1420, too. The cooler ist noisy, yes, but it is possible to avoid necessity of the cooler:
- Clean the cooler, heatpipes etc. (remove dust)
- Define a maximum cpu speed, e.g. 1100 MHz for me
- Reduce cpu voltage (for me: 1100MHz @ 0.956V)
Only with first step it should be possible to work in office programs without permanent cooler.
Step 2 causes the cpu not to run higher than 1100 MHz, it's this frequency for me because with step 3 I can run the cpu at 0.956V (that's the default voltage for 600 MHz). 600 MHz now uses 0.780V on my notebook.

So how to define maximum speed and voltages?
Use tools like RM Clock, Centrino Hardware Control, ... for Windows. Choose my voltages for beginning, these should work with every centrino cpu.

Linux:
Which version of Knoppix? Seems like ACPI is inactive, so the cpu runs constantly at maximum speed. Try to use a newer knoppix or find out which kernel you are using ( "cat /proc/version" ).
Make sure you don't use kernel boot parameters like "acpi=off".
If ACPI is active:
Could you post the output of "cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies"?
If you run "echo 600000 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq", the cooler should spin down and go off.
Changing voltages is possible in linux, but you have to compile a new kernel.

Hello Aaron,

Thanks a lot for the tips...

Well I still didn't try to reduce the CPU speed in Windows , anyway in Windows it is not a big problem... however in Linux is very disturbing...

I am new user of Linux, if you could help me I would appreciate a lot... here is some of the information you asked:

- Linux Version: 2.6.11 (root@Knoppix) (gcc-Version 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-12)) #2 SMP (Well I downloaded the newest version...);
- I am not sure how to verify if the ACPI is working... anyway I typed in the console apci and it gave me some information about the battery... with the -V option it gave me: Battery and AC adapter info, and said: No support for device type: thermal... maybe this helps;
- I tried to do: cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies but there is no such file or directory... the same answer happened when I tried echo 600000 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq

Again... Thanks a lot.

That kernel is new and should support your cpu.

I think ACPI is active then.

That's odd. cpufreq is a kernel module which is loaded by default, but apparently not in your case. Hmm... there should be logfiles somewhere but I don't remember their names... I'm currently in Windows, but what does "cat /var/log/messages | grep cpufreq" do?

One other thing:
Which bios version do you have?

Hello Aaron,

Well, I tried the "cat /var/log/messages | grep cpufreq", and it didn't give any output... well I checked the messages file and it was empty...

And my bios is:

System Bios = 1.24
EC Bios = 1.01
