For what was the HDD used before? Was there installed any other OS? Is the Disk Empty? You need to give some more information, otherwise its hard to help you.
Or is the problem, that Vista didnt even found any HDD? If thats the problem, you have git to infix the Sata Driver.

XP needs the SATA drivers, you get from FSC-Site, also you need a diskette / floppy drive for this operation. Whe the Xp setup starts push F6 when Windows setup is reading the files.
Vista seems to recognize your HDD, theres no driver needed. You should be able to install it out of the box.
My tip: Erase the whole HDD, and install, whatever you like.

Ok, you cant take a USB Flash Drive for XP, it wouldnt be recognized by in the installation setup. You need to have a Diskette Drive. How to infix it there, is easy. When there is written "Press F6 to...." you need to press F6. Then you choose the sata driver from the floppy.
Try it, if you have questions, you have to tell us.
How to bring Vista on your HDD: i dont know how to fix the problem, that you cant install it on the Hard drive.
But I will delete the HDD, install Vista, then Ubuntu. Because Vista will overwrite otherwise the bootloader of ubuntu.
For deleting the Harddisk try a Linux live CD.
