Amilo Pro V3515 and RAM

Beitragvon thom_anderson » 11.08.2011 18:38

Greetings,

I understand that this issue was raised many times now. After searching google in Polish, italian, English, Russian, Turkish, Ukranian, and Dutch (German), I have found that only one guy succeeded in installing 3 GB (1+1GB and 1+2GB) RAM on his Amilo Pro V3515.

When I email Fujitsu Support service, they give their usual: "it will support 2 GB max" thing.

What to do? Anyone had experience with this? :?

Not an easy question to answer straight off the bat.
According to VIA's specifications for this chipset VN896, it should even
be capable of handling even 4GB of Ram, however, we can't tell for sure
how memory mapping for the IGP graphics adapter is handled in each individual case, which of course
limits the usage of the maximum possible Ram.

If we want to believe the Fujitsu datasheet for this model, then you are indeed limited
to only 2 GB, but those datasheets have consistently turned out to be inaccurate, to say the least.

So yeah, in conclusion trial-and-error seems to be the only viable method to find out Max Ram,
2GB should be a safe bet, above that you're in the hands of the "Gods of bits and bytes".

Could you give reference to that guy who succeeded in installing 3 GB and have you tried contacting him?
Our forum search also doesn't shed any light on this issue...

Hang on, i found the thread:

Install the latest availble bios, and 3GB should be feasible...
He took Kingston 667MHz DDR2

I have 2GB already installed in my Amilo. I guess I will have to do try outs to see whether it works.

As for the reference to guy who actually managed to get his Amilo recognize 3GB, here is the link

topic,29180,-3GB-RAM-AMILO-Pro-V3515.html?hilit=v3515

So far, I only know that if I mix 2GB PC6400 800 Mhz with 1GB PC5300 667 Mhz, the computer BIOS recognizes RAM, but Windows does not load, and only black screen. A mix-up of two results in nothing. A single 2GB PC 6400 800 Mhz works by itself, however.

I, also, want to update those wishing to upgrade their Amilo Pro V3515 that I have successfully upgraded my CPU from Celeron M 450 to Core Duo T2500. :)

I have already newest BIOS installed. :o Any more ideas?

He took Kingston 667MHz DDR2, using faster Ram won't help your cause anyway, as the
chipset is throttling down the clocks to 667. Just go with angelkaido30's setup
and use 1GB 667 + 2GB 667.

Sure, I have noticed your post and re-edited mine too. So again, I have the newest BIOS on my Amilo. Anything else would help my cause? Somewhere in the midst of my search, I spotted people talking about using different BIOS from different Fujitsu series. Do you think that it is an option? And where to start looking?

Dunno which people you are referring to, but imho using same-brand modules
(preferably Kingston) with 667 MHz seems to be the fastest way to reach your goal.
I mean, you can always sell off your other modules, Ram prices are pretty stable (and high, of course)
atm.

Well, I will get 2GB Nanya RAM since I have two modules of them installed.

I will continue to post, as long as I unveil my experiment. Meanwhile, I would like to hear more opinions on Amilo Pro v3515 and its RAM upgrade.

Here is what Amilo had to say:

"The chipset supports up to 4GB RAM but the product iteslf supports 2GB officially. It means Fujitsu Technology Solutions had tested the product's stability only up to 2GB RAM however customers could try to use with more than 2GB but only at their own responsibility.

Please find the biggest memory module which can be ordered from us:

RAM 1GB 533MHZ DDR2 (material number: 34004241)

Please consider that i can't tell you unsure, officially untested use conditions but you could also take a look on amilo-forum where users share their experience:
http://www.amilo-forum.com/topic,1984,- ... v3515.html "

What shall I do?

After spending half of the day searching for BIOS upgrades, mods and etc. I could not get 3Gb work on my Amilo Pro v3515. It is a sad day. I tried 2Gb+1Gb same brand Hynix 667 Mhz, and also 2Gb+1Gb Nanya 667 Mhz, but no luck. I do not know what to do. I have Windows 7 32-bit Ultimate installed. Sadly processor does not support 64-bit OS. What should I do?

I'm sorry for not being able to give you any further advice, but I'm also at my wits' end.
Buy a new machine I'd say if you desperately need more Ram.

Thanks, I am OK with my Amilo. It is just sad. I do not understand how angelkaido30 who reported that he was able to load with 3gb made it. I opened BIOS with Phoenix Bios Editor, but no luck. I will search for more information, and may even try to flash my computer with other laptop's BIOS. :D

Attention to all those willing to step out of the boundaries, I am in talks with bios-mods.com group to unlock Phoenix BIOS for Amilo Pro v3515. So follow from there, and maybe we will be lucky to get the BIOS mod very soon.

Hi to all,
especially to thom_anderson for starting topic

Can't wait possible solution.

I have:

1. 2x1GB kingston 667mhz
2. Intel celeron M450 (tried to put T2080, Amilo Pro V3515 worked ok, but gets frozen every 4 or 6 days. Maybe used t2080 CPU I have purchased from eBay wasn't ok...so I returned M450. I am happy to hear that T2500 works ok, because I have ordered T2350 with lots of deliberation after bad experience with T2080)
3. Bios 1.0N-2309-8A20 -date 08/28/2009

Maybe I would be satisfied even with 2,5GB, but some extra RAM is always welcome.

Did You noticed some troubles with 2GB+512mb combination?

also, does motherboard now works at 667mhz without any trouble since Your upgrade to T2500?

Dear a.n.

It is true, I have successfully upgraded to T2500 from same Celeron M450 you own. I noticed a great difference in speed in XP especially in running 7zip or similar archiving software, and in playing video games, of course. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate, and happy to mention that fan works better, for the most time it is quieter than it would be, if I had XP, and also to mention I do not have quiet mode enabled. Moreover, I would suggest you not to forget to put thermopaste solution onto the processor and the cooling pad.

System does not freeze, it recognizes everything even 667 Mhz. I would advise you to remove CMOS battery after installing a new CPU, just as a measure to abandon old settings and timings, and acquire new ones. I have not tried 2,5 Gb of RAM, but some report success. I doubt it for now.

Yet, we are still in the progress of getting somewhere with BIOS-mods group. We discovered the hidden features like Dual Channel, CAS Latency, Internal Clock Multiplier and etc., but currently we are working to unlock them. Following the forum, I learned that VN896 motherboard (Installed in your Amilo Pro) can be modified through BIOS. Similar cases exists, and that is our chance.

I hope I answered all your questions and concerns. You are not alone in this, all advise and recommendations are welcomed. :D

thom_anderson,

Thank You for answers. It really helps to read fresh comments on this subject...

I also noticed great differences with "Intel Dual Core T2080", almost 50-70% faster processing: converting audio, rendering video etc...
I hope so that T2350 will be even faster with it's 2mb cache. But most of all I hope so that there will be no more system freezing.
And freezing was main reason to back M450...

Maybe, as you said problem was old BIOS settings (could You explain it in few words when You find free time),
but I am sure that I did not modified BIOS at all.

Thermal paste "Cooler Master HTK-002GP" is applied on my CPU and the cooling pad "Notepal Infinite" is also there to help.

but even with all that cooling forces:
-Intel M450 CPU idle temp is 49C, 50C,
-Mozilla+Foobar+Speedfan+Avira =51C - 54C, (this combination of processes freezes system, but randomly and unexplainible - only with T2080 inside)
-Full load 61C - 63C.

(Full load is almost same with T2080, but Mozz+Foo+Speedfan+Avira =49C - 51C, Idle CPU temp. 48C, 49C.)

I am not sure is that ok, because Amilo V3515 becomes really hot at touchpad and over SouthBridge (but not all time).
Let me state that over-heat is not strictly connected to CPU temperature.
Sometimes Touchpad or SouthBridge becomes really hot without too many processes loaded)

That was main reason for me to start adventure with different processors.
I hoped that faster CPU will run quite cooler (T2080 was cooler!!! and complete V3515 was slightly cooler...but not that much as I supposed,
especially not TouchPad and SouthBridge )...

I returned "Intel Celeron M450" 5 days ago and there is no more system freezing, but I miss speed and less heat that brings T2080.

thom_anderson please keep us informed, because exchanging experiences really helps...
and we can never know wich part of smallest problem with V3515 could be solution for something much bigger and essential...

Everything is connected, one solution/possibility leeds to another.

Regards a.n.
