Amilo Pro V3505 and USB boot (in English)

Beitragvon DwayneR » 17.09.2012 21:28

Hello there !

I have question about Amilo Pro V3505. Does this laptop support booting from USB ? I use various Linux distributions on my USB key now and I want to make sure I will be able to do the same with V3505.

Thank you !

Dwayne

p.s. Sorry if this is the wrong subforum.

Though I've never laid my hands on this laptop and I don't know what type of Bios vendor this machine has (AMI, Phoenix, etc),
I don't see any reason why it should not support booting from USB. Just make sure that Boot device priority is set correctly in the Bios (enter the Bios by pressing F2 oder DEL, depending on the on-screen instructions). Be aware that with quite a few Bioses the USB stick is recognized as USB-HD, so you want to set USB key and USB HD in front of the the hard disk in the priority list.

The v3505 has an Intel 945GM chipset and a phoenix BIOS which will likely make it behave similar to my Si 1520.
The Si 1520 supports booting from USB, so I'd expect the v3505 to do the same.

Thanks guys !

Another quick question if you don't mind.

Is a few years old Amilo PRO V3505 (battery lasting for about an hour) worth 100€ ? That's what the guy is offering me and I'm not sure if it's a good deal and since you are experts on Amilo, why not ask you :)

Well, that totally depends on you.

For those 100€ you'll get a computer that has about double the computing power of a new netbook, a GPU that's not even on par with the weakest amongst them, a considerably bigger but most likely dimmer screen, virtually no battery runtime, a built-in optical drive and probably a better keyboard.

The question is:
Does this look like a good deal to fulfill the tasks you intend to throw on it?
If it does buy it! You might get no similar chance. If it doesn't, don't buy it! There's no point in buying something just because it is cheap if you have no use for it.
