Change wireless card in Amili PA1510?

Beitragvon maraxion » 27.12.2012 12:47

Hello.
I have an Amilo pa 1510 with the old internal wireless B/G card.
Since I have a slow transfeer between computers on my network I wanted to upgrade the speed. I searched ebay and found a couple USB N 300m sticks. But before I ordered I wanted to check if it possible/better to change the internal wireless card? And also if so, do I have to change antennas and all of that inside the screen case?
So is this possible, or am I better of using an micro USB for speed increse?

Sure, you can also swap the internal mini-pci card against one which supports 802.11n, like this one:

Antennas can stay in, of course. Dunno about the max achievable speed, though it seems as the online
reviews indicate that it runs in full 300 MBit/s mode.

Great thanks!
Can I use any mini PCI wireless card?
Also There is only 1 antenna in my computer, do I need more on the new N type cards?

Well, any decent 802.11b/g/n card should do the job (provided you take the correct form factor),
but only one antenna? That's a serious game changer right there. I'd stay away from replacing the old adapter with
a different one, as it is unreasonable to expect better/full performance unless you are also willing to retrofit another antenna onto the tft screen behind the bezel, and route it to the mini-pci slot.
Up to you, really. I don't know whether you are much of a tinkerer.

In case you are contemplating untertaking the task, as you probably do, here's a screen replacement guide which will help you with getting access to the relevant area: download/file.php?id=3918

Thanks.
Yea its only 1 antenna on the pa1510. I have opened the screen a couple of times to change parts already, and have a spare antenna from another pa1510 I could fit in there. Insted of cracking the screen open I could also just put it behind the HDD where I have space, would help some atleast even it its not in the screen?!
So it is seriously tht mutch difference, and doe all newer cards accept 2 antennas?

My old card is the Atheros AR5005g(got 2 of em)

I'd just put it in its "usual" spot for optimal reception, and not somewhere inside the housing.

Do all newer cards have two antenna connectors?
Well, to tell you the honest truth, I am not really aware of the fact that there are any
wifi cards out there which do not have at least two, I'd say it has always been the industry standard.
Fujitsu just seems to have skimped on the second antenna with the Atheros card.

I see.
But where in general would you place the antennas normaly, and do they have to be fastened to the metal on the screen fitting for maximum performance?
I seem to remember the original one got screwed in the top left or right of the screen.

Also wil my old antennes and connector ends work on newer cards?

Yep, that's where the antennas usually go, glued to the top of the screen edge.
Old antennas and connectors will work just fine on newer cards,
the U.FL connectors are identical.

Great, you realy know your stuff siphon. :)

I have read about the N standard and do offcource have an N 300 router with gigabit network.
But there seems to be a lot of different N speed adapters out there.
You have the N150Mbps
The N300Mbps
And then there seem to be a lot of cards that have an down speed of 300 and up speed of 150!
So I was hoping for a 300/300 card offcource, since I send a lot of files on my network, but im unsure if only USB adapters have this speed or also mini PCI?
Also there is the dual band issue, not sure if I need a card with 5ghz doh, since my curent router is not dualband.

Also is there any ok progam to measure speed transfeer? Wanted to test the speed now, then with 2 antennas and last with the new N card and 2 antennas.

Checked around and found 2 cheap cards on ebay. The Broadcom(dualband)BCM43222 for 9$ and the Atheros AR5008 for 12$.
So that was cheap. But it might be better to get yours it they are bad.

Also can i just change cards? Heard of other computer owners who needs to alter bios to get it to work.
