Amilo pa1510. Problems changing mini pci wireless.

Beitragvon maraxion » 09.03.2013 11:19

Hello.
Sorry to write in english, but my Deutch is rusten, but feel free to write back in Deutch.

I have
An old Amilo PA 1510 and the stock Atheros AR5005G wireless mini pci.
Because I transfeer a lot of files and stream movies I get a lot of problems with the low speed, and bought an cheap Atheros AR5008 300m N card, thinking it would work good: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... TQ:US:1123

I incerted the card, booted to windows and the computer found it. But I culd not get it to accept drivers. All that hapend is tha I get 8 yellow non working PCI-devices under my device managment. (use windowx xp 32 at the moment, cnahing to win7 64 soon but wanted to test card first)

So after many tries I rebooted the computer and suddeny a loud beep came. And this popped up:

Any ideas?

You could try entering the Bios and load the default settings to see whether this resolves the resource conflict.
Since the drivers which came with the card obviously don't seem to work, I'd check http://www.station-drivers.com/page/atheros.htm , they are usually very up-to-date with all kinds of drivers for fancy hardware.

Great. I ried that and then the conflict dissepeared. I still couldent start the card even if th drivers got in doh.
But I removed the card and started the machine in safe mode. Checked that the card was not in device manager and stopped the machine and re inserted the card. now it seems to work :)

I seee I was premature.

The problem comes back... I can boot and get the error. And then reset bios and still get the error. Then boot to windows and the wireless does not work.
But if I then restart the computer, no error and the wireless works...

First, is there a way to fix this?
Also is there a good chance that a reinstall of windows(7 64) wil solve stubborn winxp IRQ problems, or is it a hardware problem?

When the card works hoever its strange, because the download speed is worce then my older G card. Tried various settings with no luck.

Is the resource conflict shown in the photo still the root problem? If so you need to find out with which other device your wifi module is in conflict with and resolve that conflict (my first guess would be the bluetooth module).
Back in the old days where we still used to define interrupts manually this was a common problem and easily resolved by reassigning IRQ numbers in the BIOS. But with the limited options current notebook BIOSes provide I see no way to do that.

Doubtful. It's a BIOS problem. A different OS might work better due to a different driver that might handle the IRQ sharing better. But I wouldn't bet on it.

If deactivating the conflicting component is not an option your best chance would be to replace the wifi module with another one. If it's a mini pci module as well you may run into the same problems but you get another dice roll.
If you want an option that works for sure you'll need to get a usb wifi adapter (will limit your transfer rate) or expresscard adapter (may limit your transfer rate depending on whether it uses the USB 2.0 or pci-e interface of the expresscard slot).
