Seeking MXM assistance

Beitragvon Ice-tEA » 27.02.2006 15:04

Hello,

First off all, my apologies for posting in English, but I have a question regarding Amilo's and this would seem the place with the best information available. Hope you don't mind. Please feel free to reply in German, I understand it well enough even though my attempts at gattering this infor through search gave me a headache. :)

Anyways, is there a list available for all Amilo MXM laptops? The only one that seems to list MXM explicitely is the M1437G, even though I'm 90% sure the 3438/4438 also has it. Does that mean the entire Amilo M series has it? And what type?

So, my question is: what FJS laptops have MXM and what type are they?

Any help would he highly appreciated, and who knows, maybe I can return the favor one day ;)

Amilo M1437: MXM1
Amilo M1439: MXM1
Amilo M3438: MXM2 (maybe MXM3)
Amilo M4438: see M3438
Amilo M6453: MXM1
Amilo A1667: MXM1 (maybe MXM2)
Amilo A3667: MXM1 or MXM2

Edit:
Is this your site?
http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/

Also interested in which Amilos definitely don't have MXM?

Aaron

Yes it is :D I didn't want to include the link with my first post, because at this point I'm more interested in information and I don't want to get banned on the acount of advertising :)

It is in start-up phase, so please don't be too hard on me, I know I still have a lot of work to do.

Thanks a lot of information. It's very helpfull!

Btw, I should receive my first x700 sample shortly. There is still some confusion about the MXM type, but if it's Type I, that would mean that it's a decent upgrade from the x600SE in the M6453!

Any further information more then welcome.

It seems the M6453 has problems with (at least some) other MXM1 cards. Someone tried a Geforce 6600 and couldn't get it to work :-(

I think it would be a good idea to extend your list to which MXM cards definitely work other than the original (and which BIOS version is required).
I know that would be a lot of work, especially now because there are only so few MXM cards on the market.

Edit:
Amilo Pi 1536: MXM2 (see here)

Well, I'm still building up the site, but the whole idea is to gather all the information I can lay my grubby hands on. In the future, that should definetly include verified upgrades/combinations.

By the way, I'm digging my way through the specifications in order to be able to list what should work.

With all this in mind, would there be someone who's interested in verifying the x700 on the M6453? Needless to say it would be on your own risk, but I imagine I could provide one real cheap provided the owner would document the process real well...

Here! I'd do it.

At the moment, I'm running the GMA900 but wouldn't say no to test the x700.
I also have various BIOSes and an PPLC Flasher if something goes wrong trying the BIOSes.

Documentation is no problem.

Amilo notebooks without MXM:
Amilo M1405. M1420, M1424, M1425, M7405, M7424, M7425
Amilo A1630, A1640, A1645, A1650, A1655, A7640, A7645
Amilo L1300, L7300, L1310

These could have MXM, but we'd have to check that:
Amilo M6450, M6451 (sold with IGD)
Amilo Pro V2040, V2060 (sold with IGD)
Amilo Pro V2045, V2065 (sold with ATI graphics)

I think these don't have MXM, but I'm not sure:
Amilo M1450, M1451
Amilo Pro V2030, V8010

Lifebooks without MXM:
Lifebook C1320, E8020, S7020
(So far I know no Lifebook that has MXM, perhaps the new E8110.)

Good to hear!

The compatibility issues dicribed could be due to poor MXM standard implementation, especially with respect to the various MXM structures (Input/Output/Thermal). Furthermore, I think thermal throttling may only be supported under Windows? Not sure if this would be right.

I guess we'll have to wait untill I get a word from my supplier to know if it's a type I or II card.

I would like to suggest the following if it goes trough: I send you the module, free off charge and you give it a go. If you decide to keep it, I'll charge you 100€. That will be well below my DKP, but your information will be very valuable. If you decide to send it back, shipping costs are yours. I realise I'll have no way of enforcing the deal after the card is shipped, but I'll have to trust you

aspettl, your information is invaluable. I'll add it as soon as a I get a chance.

Sounds like a good deal.

Perhaps we can trade the x700 with my old x600se which was originally built-in. I simply don't want to have a recent graphics card laying around as they loose value too fast.

Anyway, if it's an MXM/I drop me a line and we'll negotiate the rest.

Regards
Sascha

PS: I thought thermal throttling is implemented inside the GPU - just like intel's thermal protection. Imagine a 3D game and the fan fails with the driver doesn't notice it

Hi Sacha,

Please understand I have only begun to unravel this whole thing, but as it would seem there is some information that is stored in either the System Bios or a seperate ROM on the motherboard. The thermal solution implemented in the laptop is part of this information. So the throttling is done on the MXM, but it's possible that the core and mem are throttled down by default because the driver decides, based on the MoBo ROM, that it is not safe to run it at higher speeds. That's about all I know about it. This information can be found in the publicaly released MXM info, so you can look it up if you want. Anyways, at first glance, this could be a possible source of compatibility issues when it's bad/incompletely implemented either because of stupidity or the manu's refusal to support upgraders.

I remembered another notebook, which I think doesn't has MXM (it would make absolutely no sense...) ;-)

I hope amilo-forum.de get's a link in your hall of fame, too :-D (reference to your thegamebooks.com posting).

Another suggestion:
Your site needs proper information about its owner, real name, contact information etc. Nobody would buy something if that information is missing.

True. Everything is going a bit faster than I expected to be honnest. I am rapidly trying to transform this from an 'idea' to a 'company'.

On a related note: I need some sleep!
